U.S. Paid Internship Program – For University Students

Program Introduction

Relevant Image
The Summer Work & Travel USA program is based on the Smith-Mundt Act, passed by the U.S. government in 1948, which established the basic framework for exchange visitor programs. This act was later incorporated into and expanded by the Fulbright-Hayes Act in 1961. Before being promoted in mainland China, the program had already been successfully operated in Europe, the Americas, and other parts of Asia for over 40 years. Each year, tens of thousands of students use their summer vacations to enter U.S. companies for short-term internships of 12 – 14 weeks on a J-1 visa. In addition to their internships, participants have the opportunity to travel within the U.S., experience American culture, and gain firsthand insight into the country. The visa is valid for approximately four months, allowing students to work for three months and then have an additional month of legal stay for travel.
